Windows Live services grabs Nokia

Microsoft and Nokia made an agreement under which Nokia's upcoming 60 series will have Windows live services embedded. Instant Messenger and Hotmail are two major Windows Live services.

The service will be free of charge initially.Under the deal, Nokia will start offering Windows Live Hotmail and Windows Live Messenger on its most powerful Series 60 handsets this year. Later in the year or early next year, the services will be made available on Series 40 phones.

Berkowitz said Microsoft will continue to develop versions of Windows Live services for its own Windows Mobile operating systems as well as slimmed-down WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) versions that can run on a wide array of phones.

As for whether it would develop any sites tailored for Apple's iPhone, Berkowitz quipped, "If the iPhone were ever to get any distribution, maybe."

He added that the company will go where the marketplace and its customers demand. "Our best place to invest is where the reach is," he said. "Nokia is a great example of that."

The latest deal has been in the works for more than a year, the companies said.

"It's taken a bit of time and a bit of learning on both sides," said Nigel Rundström, Nokia's vice president of multimedia experiences.

Bebo in Love with Microsoft

One of dominant social networking site 'Bebo' will partner with Microsoft to use its instant messaging service.

Bebo, the largest social networking site in the UK, will allow its 36 million global users to export and import contacts between its site and contacts lists maintained on Microsoft's Windows Live online services.

Bebo users will be able to add "IM me" button on their profile to send instant message on one click.

"Our core strength is not building applications. We're more of an open platform and much more likely to partner than build it ourselves," said Joanna Shields, president of Bebo's international business.

It is logical decision as 90% of Bebo users use Windows Live IM services.

Microsoft has more than 300 million Windows Live users, who frequently log in to check email and instant messages. Those users represent Microsoft's most valuable asset in catching Web leaders Google Inc and Yahoo! Inc.

In recent months, Microsoft has announced deals to broker display advertising with fast-growing social network Facebook and news site Digg - two of the hottest names in the "Web 2.0" phenomenon.

Hotmail is planning to offer 5GB of free email storage which is more than double what Google's Gmail offer. Another big change in Hotmail will be to turn off the news and other bogus stuff on main page. Hotmail will also offer 10GB additional space with $14.99 yearly subscription.

According to hotmail's official blog  following major changes are going to happen in Hotmail:

Looking inside gBox

gBox starts with 'g' so it should belong to Google. After trying its hand on mobile, office and checkout, Google is all set to enter Music market. Yes , it is true. gBox is not a box of software , it is a alliance with Universal to sell online DRM free music.

The newly formed relationship will promote Universal’s music via Google’s SERPS and link to a Google Checkout page which will allow users to buy both a DRM-free and with-DRM tracks in MP3 format.

Universal have recently left iTunes and started selling all DRM free music through amazon ,walmart and BestBuy.

According to Google it is only advertisement relationship but every one knows what they mean by it :-P

Microsoft starts new Advertiser and Publisher Solutions Group

Fighting Google face to face , Microsoft today announched a new group for advertisement and publishing. This group is named "Advertiser and Publisher Solutions Group ". Group will be headed by former CEO of aquantive , Brian McAndrews. Microsoft have just closed the deal ($6bn acquision) with aQuantive.

According to Kevin Johnson, Microsoft's president of Platforms & Services Divisions, the new group is part of the plan to become "one of the top two online advertising platforms in the industry."

Quotes from Official Microsoft News:

"Microsoft Corp. has completed its acquisition of aQuantive Inc. The acquisition will help Microsoft deliver on its previously outlined goal to provide the advertising industry with a world-class advertising platform across devices and media that will create the best experiences for users, advertisers and publishers.

Microsoft also created the Advertiser and Publisher Solutions (APS) Group. This new business group will be responsible for building Microsoft’s monetization engine to serve the advertiser and publisher community. The APS team will assume responsibility for building and marketing all ad platforms, including Atlas, DRIVEpm, MSNDR and Microsoft® AdCenter, along with emerging media types such as in-game and mobile ads, and the agency arm Avenue A | Razorfish. The APS group will be run by Brian McAndrews, CEO of aQuantive, who will report directly to Kevin Johnson, president of Microsoft’s Platforms & Services Division (PSD).

“Today we take a significant step forward in our ability to capture share of the $40 billion online ad opportunity and the larger $600 billion ad market, which is rapidly shifting to the world of online and IP-served platforms, including TV and gaming,” Johnson said. “The addition of aQuantive’s technologies and people to the Microsoft portfolio is a core, strategic investment and step forward in our plans to become one of the top two online advertising platforms in the industry.”"

Ask.com is most secure search engine

According to an article on news.com, Ask.com is most protective for users' privacy. Ask.com is going to stop recording what users are typing. Other major search engine like Google avoid the behavioral targeting but after 18 months it perform partial anonymization of users' Internet Protocol addresses--an action that's not terribly privacy protective.

On the other end, Microsoft do the behavioral targetting but after 18 month it permanent disassociates its search engine from data collected from users like cookies/ ip addresses.

It is great improvement from keep the users data forever. Use below link to read whole article

The war of Online Storage

Cloud computing is still far away but war for cloud storage has began. Microsoft, Google and Apple have bring out thier weapons for online storage war.

Let begin with Microsoft, Microsoft is ready to do or die in online services war. Last week Microsoft unveiled the SkyDrive service where users can store files upto 500MB.This storage is not only for email or photos, users can use it desktop harddisk. They made it very easy to use by providing option for Drag and Drop. Users will also have option to share their files on internet.

Now come to Googles efforts on online storage. Google have squashed all the hopes that it will keep adding space for gmail/picasa. Users have to buy online storage if they Overflow

Quotes from Ryan Aquino's official google blog:

"When you reach the limit of free storage (i.e., 1GB for Picasa Web Albums, 2.8GB for Gmail), consider this your overflow solution. Plans start at $20/year for 6GB (yes, $5 cheaper than before), with larger plans ranging up to 250GB. If only testing everything were this easy.

We'll update this post as soon as we're ready to take your order.
Update: And we're live! To buy more storage, go here. "

On google users can buy upto 250GB online storage which will be shared among all google services like Gmail, Picasa Web and in future Google Apps(Docs & spreadshits).

Now coming to Apple, why should apple be behind google and microsoft so it also increased its .Mac online storage from 1GB to 20GB. The price of .Mac's overall subscription remained the same at $99 per year, but the service comes with a number of other tools such as Mac training, web hosting, and heavy desktop software integration.

All these moves reflect the battle in online storage space. Although Microsoft is offering only 1/5 of Google's storage , it is free and can be used for uploading any kind of files. It is very easy to use. Currently I will go for it but I would like to try gDrive when it become reality.

Google Pack to include Sun's Star Office

Another story in war between Microsoft & Google. Google pack will distribute Sun's start office as free software. There are two point here , first one why google is not supporting OpenOffice and second one how much sun will be paying for it.

Star Office is Sun's version of Open Office, which is a free but slow and somewhat bug-ridden clone of an old version of Microsoft Office. (Sun bought the failed German program on which it's based.)

Following are components of Google Pack:

  1. Norton Security Scan
  2. Spyware Doctor
  3. Adobe Reader
  4. Skype and RealPlayer
  5. Mozilla
  6. StarOffice

You can download Google Pack from: http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_installer.html?hl=en&gl=us

Xbox 360 is cheaper now. Microsoft reduces the price.

Call it the effect of hardware problems in xbox or release of one of the best selling game EA sports' Madden NFL 08 - Microsoft have just annouched a 100$ price cut for xbox 360 consoles.

Now xbox 360 primium bundle will cost $399.99 which includes the 20GB machine, wireless controller, headset and game. Elite edition will cost $499.99 (earlier it was $549.99). The entry-level core system (no hard drive, wired controller and composite A/V cables) is now $299.99 as opposed to $399.99.

There is one more surprise from Microsoft :

Next month you can also buy the Xbox 360 Halo 3 Special Edition Console for $449.99, featuring a green-and-gold finish and matching Xbox 360 wireless controller, along with a 20GB hard drive, headset and more. Oddly enough, however, this "Halo 3 Special Edition" Xbox 360 console does not ship with a copy of Halo 3, which will cost you an additional $69.99, $79.99 or $149.99, depending on the version you want.
